have skinned pigs, sheep etc and eaten them, leaving entrails in bedrooms. Slept in very dirty café. Billeted in a farm which had shortly before been occupied by Germans. 18 October 1914 The 9th Brigade was ordered to (Herlies) attack HERLIES & a chateau east of it, whilst the 7th Brigade were ordered on ILLIES. The Royal Scots Fusiliers were directed on the chateau with the Lincolns in reserve, & the 5th Fusiliers on the north end of HERLIES.
