At various times during the day we were exposed to high explosive shell fire which caused casualties amongst the firing line and the reserves. At about 5.30pm we were ordered to continue the advance & I sent C Company under Captain Boyle to support A Company. It was now getting dark. Shortly after this I was ordered to withdraw from the chateau wood and entrench a position which I had reconnoitred about 800 yards north of the wood. Lieutenant Lyon took this message to the front and the retirement was made in in good order. Our casualties were heavy. Captain Hurt, Captain Boyle Mr Cozens Brooke killed, Lieutenant Dunne, Graham, Tullis, Paton [and] Barton wounded, about 25 Non-Commissioned Officers & men
