23 October 1914 Occupied trenches with Lincolns on our right & Royal Scots on our left. We heard yesterday that our 1st Army Corps had inflicted a severe defeat on the Germans to the north. 24-25 October 1914 Still in trenches but not worried much by enemy. The Gordons seem to have had an unfortunate night. One or two of the officers came in in the night and related their experiences [in pencil: but it did not sound well!] [Note in margin: Their trenches were attacked & they were driven out; from accounts received it looks as if they had been taken by surprise, & were not keeping a good look-out. Middlesex under Hull retook the trenches.] 26 October 1914 Continued to improve the trenches and cover. Enemy make fresh trenches and approach to within 500 yards of ours, sniping chiefly. Strong attack by enemy last night after having heavily shelled their objective all the afternoon. They pushed through a gap & two regiments were brought
