Canadian left becoming exposed this Division had to retire and the Germans took St Julien. The last we heard of the French was that they had recaptured Steenstraate on the west of the Canal – but this was not true – Artillery bombardment has been going on all night of 25-26 & still continues today 26th. The Lahore Division arrived last night & is now attacking St Julien on a front of 1000 yards. We have heard no result so far, but unless the attack is strongly supported by Heavy & Field Artillery it cannot be successful – the Germans beat off yester day's counter attack chiefly by machine gun fire.
