mine to prevent an advance - it is quite possible that they may have discovered our mine, & counter mined us - they made no attack, & this is the first time during the war that I can remember that no attack accompanied the explosion - the explosion caused about 30 casualties: most of the men who were buried were dug out that night, & were very little the worse. The mound (in front of us which the mine exploded) by St Eloi used to belong to us but during the time the 27th Div was holding this line, the Germans attacked & captured the mounded still hold it. It is a very strong position & commands a good view, so it was a serious
