Gordons as soon as they left the trench were fired on heavily both by machine gun & rifle fire - they advanced about 150 yards but could get no further which landed them about 50 yards from the first German trench. The French on our left were also attacking in the direction of WYCHAETE but were unable to make much progress. The German artillery were firing in the mean time but at no time could the fire be called heavy. Our bombardment from 7 to 7.45 did not seem to have much appreciable affect although thousands of shells were fired. The Germans as long as they remained in their trenches would not suffer much.
