has lost about 800 casualties. The mines exploded well & under cover of the confusion the 5th Fusiliers charged across the open & captured the 1st & 2nd German lines. The Royal Fusiliers were met by a heavy barrage of Artillery & machine guns on the left front & they were only able to take a portion of their objective – they lost 10 officers killed & wounded and about 300 other ranks. The Germans seemed to know that the attack was to take place but did not know of the mines. The Royal Scots Fusiliers who were waiting in support in case of a counter attack lost fairly heavily from shell fire & Lieutenant Colonel McConaghey was wounded in the knee & Major Lambert the 2nd in Command was killed. Owing to the mines & danger of our men being hit by stones etc
