inspected there were very few cases but in others where less trouble had been taken a good many men suffered. The gas helmet answered the purpose very well. Men wearing gas helmets for two hours were much exhausted. Other men who had to walk 400 yards through deep mud with helmets on felt the effects of exhaustion. Gas employed was mainly chlorine but there was a lighter gas mixed with it. Gas affected men 9000 yards behind the front line – electric hooters or gongs should be supplied to give warning of gas.
