role will probably be to form a defensive flank facing south. I motored up to Dickebusch to see General Officer Commanding 18th Division (Lee) from whom I take over in the course of the next few days. On the 7th to my intense astonishment & pleasure I receive a telegram ordering me to take over command of the 20th Division as General Matheson had been gassed. General Dudgeon is appointed to command 56th. The 20th Division had moved its headquarters to Dragon Camp near International Corner. I take over command on the 8th. Miller, my old adjutant, is now Assistant Quartermaster General of the division. The division is to take part in the operations on the 14th Corps front on August 16, our objectives being the village of Langemarck and ground on either side of it with 29th Division on our left and the 11th Division on our right, attacking level with us.
