9-16 August 1917 After the attack by the 38th Division (Blackadder) in which they advanced our line to the river STEENBEKE on August 1, patrols from both sides had held posts on or near the Steenbeke but it was now decided to cross the stream (if possible by peaceful penetration) so as to allow the assaulting columns to form up on the other side. The river was about 15-20 feet broad with steep banks & the water in places four to five feet deep so it was a considerable obstacle. The near bank was commanded by some concrete dug outs, very well sited & of great strength. The 59th Brigade was ordered to cross the stream on the morning of the 14th & capture this position.
