As it turned out from what we heard afterwards the Germans expected to be attacked on the 4th Corps front, but expected nothing on our front. There were 204 tanks on our corps front, & these assembled two nights before zero & were hidden in villages & camouflaged behind banks etc.
17 November 1917 The 6th Division took over the northern portion of our line. 20th Division left outposts in the front trench & the 6th Division held the support trenches. This was done so that if the Germans did make a raid they would still find the 20th Division holding the front line & their suspicions would not be aroused. Heavy & field Artillery was being moved up into position [in pencil: after dark 3 days previous] but not a gun
