Shortly after this a telephone system was found at Cable Head near Surrey Ravine. There I met Lieutenant Colonel Haskard, General Staff Officer Grade 1, and told him the situation so far as I knew it and told him of my plan to make my headquarters at Surrey Ravine. We ran out lines to the Reserve Battalion and so obtained communication both with that Battalion and with Division. Later communication was established with General Officer Commanding 61th Brigade who had fallen back to the Hindenburg Line. The Reserve Battalion was in touch on the left with the 61st Brigade and on the right with some elements of the 12th Division, I believe the Gloucesters. On the night of the 30th a Battalion of the 3/6 Sherwoods was sent me and my Brigade Major led them up to the Reserve Battalion. They were put in to the Hindenburg Line and placed under the orders of Lieutenant Colonel Priaulx. They were employed later in the front line in holding back the enemy.
