that until our line was strongly wired & consolidated there was a danger of the enemy breaking through the outpost line if he attacked in any strength but I expected that he would be held up on the main position; from no place could one see into the whole of La Rue des Vignes & that constituted the danger but as mentioned above the risk of holding such a position was counter balanced by other tactical advantages. The batteries were dangerously close to the enemies [sic] front line to the east, but there were no other positions from which our infantry could be protected & which would be concealed from the enemy.
