30 November 1917 About 7am very heavy firing was heard to the east and north & at 8am from our divisional headquarters we could see men moving back from Gonnelieu. The men were not armed but were carrying tools so we took them to be Labour Battalion men returning from work. However a few minutes later news was received that the Germans had broken through on the front of the 12th & the 55th Divisions. Shortly after a message came in that the men holding our outpost line had been driven back & that they were falling back to the Hindenburg line. It appears that the enemy had attacked the 55th Division of the 7th Corps (which was on the right of the 3rd Corps, & the 12th Division at about 7am & had then attacked our front at about 7.45. Lateau Wood held by the 12th Division was captured
