30 June 1916 It is decided to discharge the gas tonight if wind favourable, hour selected 2.45am. The Canadians on our right were relieving but the relief will be completed by then & the German barrage would not catch them. The wind luckily was favourable & the gas was discharged. Numerous red & green rockets were immediately sent up from the German lines but their artillery did not open fire until 20 mins after and then it was very heavy, knocking down much of the parapet & causing a good few casualties. I dined with the Corps Commander & met the Prince of Wales who was delightfully natural. He has a look of his father
