The British & French attacked on a fifteen mile front north & south of the Somme after a seven day bombardment. The French captured FRISE & the second line of the German trenches. The British right captured their objective but failed on the left to take SERRE & further south & had to fall back on their original line. The 29th & 8th Divisions suffering very heavily. 4000 prisoners were captured by the British & 6000 by the French. The Germans were able to bring up 3 divisions to counter attack.
