This failed in the centre but succeeded on our left: heavy fighting still continuing. 2-3 July 1916 British & French are still in the captured positions but there is no further news. I spent the morning up the line, very little activity on either side. A new observation post within about 600 yards of the German trenches enables one to get an excellent view of the German front line & the ground in rear. The weather has greatly improved & is typical summer weather. 4-9 July 1916 The German trenches have been heavily bombarded at certain times every day and his retaliation has not been heavy. He seems to be reserving his 5.9 ammunition unless he has moved away
