Batteries are on the move to take up forward positions and the congestion on the roads is appalling. Gangs of men are always at work metalling & mending the roads but the metal cannot be brought up quick enough. Montauban village is shelled every day but not heavily. 18 September 1916 The Germans counter attacked our right twice but each time were driven off with loss. The 12th Rifle Brigade & 12th King's Royal Rifles distinguished themselves in repelling these attacks which consisted of from 150 to 200 men. Some very fine active patrolling was carried out by these two battalions and in conjunction with the 6th Division on our right, they shot a great number of Germans.
