At this point the attackers disappeared from view but shortly after Germans could be seen running over the ridge towards our lines & we concluded that the 2nd objective was taken. Soon after the contact aeroplane [sic] dropped a map showing the position of the troops. Some of our men were in the second objective but divisions of left and right had not been able to advance so the 20th Division had both flanks in the air & I was anxious lest a counter attack on either flank might take place before we could get consolidated & strong points made. The enemy did put up a counter attack on our left but was driven back. In the meantime the [aeroplane – crossed out] observers could see the Germans reinforcing their front line in
