[handwritten table of data on German heavy artillery batteries by army/location. NB there are additional notes in WDS's original not transcribed by KDS] our barrage and there was no hesitation or halting. Congratulatory message from Army Commander. The French in the meantime had made a good advance towards Sailly Saillesel 9 October 1916 General Ross took over from me at 9.30am & my Headquarters moved to Treux. We were promised a good rest but it all depends on the situation & we might be called back any moment. In one of the 4th Army communiques the distribution of the German Heavy Artillery on the Western Front is given approximately as follows: [arrow to table on previous page] 10 October 1916 Weather has cleared and it is a perfect day. Drove round to see the brigades, everyone quite cheery and the officers speak very highly of the work the men did on the 7th. It transpires that the failure of the [12th – crossed out] 21st Division [in pencil: under Campbell] to advance on the 7th
