[Insert: manuscript pages of notes for speech by WDS Speech made to 59th Brigade after capture of Guillemont I want to take this opportunity to tell you how magnificently you fought during the fight for Guillemont. This small village has been able to hold up the advance of the army in this part for some considerable time & although it has on one or two occasions been penetrated by the infantry the latter were unable to hold it owing to the heavy shelling and German counter attacks. You have done what no other troops up to date have been able to accomplish & it will always be a red letter day for all of you who took part in the fight. Nothing could have been finer than the courage and dash displayed by all & it was mainly owing to this that the village was captured. As you know, the attack was postponed two or three times & during the whole of this time the trenches were exposed to heavy shell fire. Then it rained, & your trenches were
