Over 5000 prisoners captured. 16 November 1916 The prisoners taken by 5th Army amount to 6000, the largest number taken in one operation since the Somme offensive began. The 3rd Division failed to take Serre – the going was apparently very difficult & ground very muddy. General Shutes' (one of my late Brigadiers) division distinguished itself. Still cold and hard frost at night. 17 November 1916 Snowed during night and very cold. 18 November 1916 Warmer again & a thaw sets in – our move up to the line has been postponed till December 10. 19-23 November 1916 Weather interferes with any offensive operations. Roads are getting worse. Lorries are prohibited to use roads close behind Front – in the space of eight hours over 580 lorries
