*some people appear to think that the German intention was not to attack, but ordered the bombardment & gas attack in order to find out where our reserves were. reserves falling in* & our gun positions – they could have done this just as well without the gas. Our aeroplanes were up by about 7am & gave chase but the German planes were faster than ours and got away. I hear one machine on either side was brought down. 20 December 1915 Fairly heavy shelling on both sides during the day 21 December 1915 Relieve the 8th Brigade – reliefs completed by 9.45pm very wet night. More details have been published about the German gas attack on the 6th Corps front – the Germans began sending up coloured lights at 5am red rockets were sent up all along the front, & shortly after the sentries heard & smelt the gas – in some part of the line the gas attack
