Full text: Diary of service on the Western Front, 1915-1916, World War One (volume)

Batteries near our Head Quarters for some time with heavy shells & their shooting was pretty accurate. News was received last night that we had withdrawn our forces from Suvla Bay & Anzac in Gallipoli – the withdrawal was carried out with very little loss although the Germans in their report say that many prisoners & stores were captured – both sides probably lying freely as usual. It is hard to say which does it best – any how the expedition was a failure & our casualties very heavy. Our ammunition allowance for the week is 3 batteries of 18 pounders of 5 guns each 500 rounds 1 4.5 Howitzer Batteries 140 rounds 6 Siege Battery of 4 guns 400 rounds 2 trench mortars 100 rounds each. Plenty of 6" & 8" Howitzer ammunition in hand
