Our artillery has bombarded these trenches for the last week preparatory to this attack so it has not allowed them much chance of strengthening their line. This afternoon we heard that they had taken 129 German prisoners & that three counter attacks had been beaten off by artillery & machine gun fire, so our people have done well – the German prisoners state that their losses have been considerable

4 March 1916 Started at 7am with the Major General & my Brigade Major to motor to Bray on the Somme to see some craters formed by mining operations by the 3rd Army – the weather was very cold & it snowed most of the time we arrived at about midday
