Full text: Diary of service on the Western Front, 1915-1916, World War One (volume)

The trenches along the east bank of the canal are shelled every day & as fast as one can build them up they get knocked flat. The bottoms of most of the trenches are very muddy – battalions do not keep them clean. The trench discipline of these Service Battalions is not nearly so good as that of regular battalions – ammunition is lying about & in some cases men are not wearing their equipment & the sanitation is bad. The men themselves are quite keen & intelligent, but the discipline is not good. Beautiful weather now & quite warm 15 March 1916 Went to canal bank to see General Shute. Fairly quiet day. Artillery Ammunition has again been cut down & batteries are only allowed 10 rounds per gun daily
