or else crept through it which could not have been done without noise; two men occupying a post on the west bank of the canal saw the Germans advancing up to the bombing post but for some unknown reason did not fire on them. [Insert: sketch map of the German attack] Result of bad discipline. The Battalion the post belonged to was the 12th King's Royal Rifles. This is a very bad line, overlooked everywhere by the Germans whose observation is particularly good. The latter have any amount of 4.2 & 5.9 ammunition & fire nearly all day destroying work which has been built up during the night.
