We retired to our dug outs until it was over – most of the windows in the house are broken, & we cannot get them mended. Rained hard all the 13th & the glass is still falling. The Germans are said to have steel cupolas protecting them. Issued with new pattern hand grenade which is a great improvement on the old one barrel shaped and about 4 inches long. A convenient size to hold in the palm of the hand and an unpractised thrower can throw it between 30 and 40 yards. The French seem to be making good progress towards Lens and have captured over 4000 prisoners our offensive in the south
