[insert: sketch map of craters, German line and new British line] Inspect machine gun company of 60th Brigade – very badly turned out. 1 April 1916 Ramage & Kreglinger rode over to see me this afternoon – the 9th Brigade goes back to rest for a fortnight. The situation at St Eloi seems to be a little complicated & is not quite what I thought it was. The Germans apparently occupy three craters slightly behind our new line & the communication trench from their new line to these craters is very strongly defended. It should not be a difficult matter to turn them out & I understand this is to be done. The Germans made two counter attacks which failed. This appears to be the present situation.
