15 May 1915 German shelling very heavy during greater part of day causing very many casualties. These bombardments were not followed up by infantry attacks, so it looks as if they were trusting to their heavy artillery to cause casualties, & not to ex pose their own infantry. I hear that during the last fortnight our casualties round Ypres amounted to 40,000, & the 1st Army lost about 12,000 in their unsuccessful attempt in the south – nothing is known of the German casualties except
