meet the lorries – unload the cylinders & carry them up to the trenches – each cylinder requires four men – two carry it slung on a pole & the other two men are reliefs. The state of the ground made this very hard work & the men were very done up after their carry of about half a mile. The cylinders were installed without accident & with the exception of about 40, were ready with the pipes attached at 1.30am on the 13th. The officers who are specialists & their men stay in the trenches until the gas is let out; every half hour from 9.30pm to mid night & after, a report as to direction of wind was sent to Brigade & Divisional Headquarters by code. Luckily the wind was favourable although at one time it veered round to the north.
