The weather has been very fine and warm, & we are gradually getting our trenches dry once more. The Russians have had a severe defeat I see, & have lost all the Carpathian passes – want of ammunition was no doubt responsible for this – unless the Russians can stem this advance we shall hear that Prysmysl has fallen & Lemberg besieged. In the meantime it will enable Germany to move troops from East to West. We quite expect another attack on Ypres salient & this time it is quite possible the Germans may try to get through on the south east of the salient. One of our guns knocked out six men of the Royal Scots Fusiliers - shell bursting short. The French have re captured STEENSTRAATE
