23 April 1915 The French Division to the north of our line was heavily attacked last night & was obliged to fall back about 1½ miles, thus exposing the left flank of the Canadian Division on the French right. A counter attack was made this morning but was unsuccessful – the left of the Canadians is still holding its original position – Ypres is still being shelled with 17 inch shells & it must be in ruins. The Royal Scots Fusiliers were heavily bombed last night by a trench mortar – one officer & five men killed & 10 wounded – nearly all the officers & men complained of sore eyes yesterday & thought the Germans had drop ped some fine powder from aeroplanes or it spread on a shell bursting.
