and [sic] Liverpool Scottish in the second line. One battalion of the 7th Brigade to protect my right flank & advance on HOOGE from the west. The 18th Brigade on our left were to demonstrate with rifle & machine gun fire – to support our attack the following artillery was detailed. Four 9.2, twelve 4.5" Howitzers, thirty six 18 pounders, five 5" Howitzers, twenty four 4.7 guns, twelve 60 pounders, four 6 inch guns, four 2.75 mountain guns. By 1.30am on the 16th the five regiments had reached their positions without a hitch & in silence. At 3.30am the guns opened fire and this was continued until 4.15am with two breaks of ten minutes. My headquarters were in a dug out on the railway embankment and I had an observing station in a farm house about 200 yards further on
