to control our artillery fire. Field guns and mountain guns were in concealed [anchored - crossed out] positions close up to the line, & did good execution. We also had a Motor Machine Gun battery of six guns flanking the German position from the Menin Road. The 7th Brigade lost about 50 officers & 1200 other ranks. As an operation it was not a success [in that - crossed out] the third & final objective was not captured - in my opinion had the 7th Brigade remained in reserve & not joined in the attack before they received orders, we should have taken this position. Three of their regiments advanced with ours and added to the confusion, & presented masses of men to the German Artillery fire. Their role was to make good the positions won or
