25 July 1915 Very quiet: we are informed that one of our agents states Germans intend to attack north east of Ypres tomorrow. Ger man aeroplane brought down inside our lines in the evening – pilot killed 26 July 1915 No signs of projected German attack so far – General Surtees commanding one of the Brigades of 17th Division is to take over this line – he is going round part of the line today. 27-29 July 1915 Nothing much doing – Germans said to be mining towards some of our trenches – this is the sort of warfare it has developed into now. 30 July 1915 At 3.30am the Germans attacked HOOGE using liquid fire & incendiary bombs. The village was held by a Brigade of the 14th Division which has just relieved in the trenches (?) thus they were at a disadvantage in
