Full text: Diary of service on the Western Front, 1915-1916, World War One (volume)

I hear the trenches were held by Wurtenburgers & a Prussian regiment. 11 August 1915 Enemy shelled VLAMERTINGHE & YPRES with 17 inch guns – stopped traffic at the former. The base of these shells often burst & carry up to half a mile – it is 2 cwt in weight. Our Artillery was very busy yesterday & shelled continuously all the afternoon. Received orders that the 41 Brigade is to relieve us tomorrow night. The former has had a bad time during the fighting at Hooge & lost very heavily. The new Army is under the great disadvantage of having very few trained officers & N.C.O's & when a number of these become casualties they have the greatest difficult in finding trained men to take their places.
