round the left half of our line 1 September 1915 Visited trenches again with General Mackenzie & also two of our batteries in position 2 September 1915 Bombardment arranged to begin and last one hour on enemies trenches round Stirling Castle – Fort 13 & north of Menin Road – reported to be effective Enemy retaliates by heavy fire on Hooge trenches & crater in the evening. About 60 casual ties & works very much damaged 3 September 1915 A similar bombardment as yesterday on more or less the same fronts. Heavy retaliation by Germans. 4 September 1915 Has been raining hard for last two days & has not stopped yet – digging almost impossible hard enough to stand up or walk 5 September 1915 Major Jackson Royal Scots Fusiliers of the Hythe staff is attached to us
