by the High Explosive Ammunition and very little of it has been fired. There cannot be sufficient supervision in its manufacture. The attack alarm signal was wired down from the trenches a night or two ago – but it turned out to be a false alarm -one of the officers thought from the heavy firing that the Germans were going to attack – so the guns of the division were immediately turned on. I have heard sounds of heavy firing to the south the last two or three days. I hope we are doing something down there. Our line extends to fifteen miles south of Arras so we have taken over many miles of front from the French. Walked round trenches today 9.30am to 4.30pm, mud & water very bad.
