7 September 1915 Rode to Ouderdom to visit regiments in camp about five miles back. German artillery very quiet. 8 September 1915 Walk round trenches Germans still very quiet and scarcely any shelling – both sides working very hard at their trenches. Every night the 9th Brigade have about 1500 men working. An 18 pounder gun is being used against aeroplanes – it is merely a makeshift as we are not well off for anti aircraft guns – it can only fire at an angle of 21° and by the time it has fired three shells the German aeroplane is out of range 9 September 1915 Wind still in north east favourable for German gas – a deserter from German lines gave himself up yesterday – said he
