19 September 1915 Germans bombarded heavily in early morning north of Hooge and in the evening turned a very heavy fire on our trenches and the wood. Several trenches were badly damaged – but casualties not very heavy Royal Scots Fusiliers had about 32, the 5th Fusiliers only 2, the officer of the latter whose trenches were fired on gathered from the shelling in the morning where the Germans were directing their fire, and moved his men out of the line – if he had not done this the casualties would have been very heavy. This shows what can be done by an officer who uses his intelligence. 20 September 1915 Heavy gunning a great part of the day.
