Towards evening the shelling died down, and at night everyone began to get to work on the trenches. The Lincolns relieved the Royal Scots Fusiliers who went back to billets - they lost about five officers killed & the same number wounded and 300 men. About 160 prisoners were taken mostly belonging to the 172nd regiment. The object of the attack was principally to prevent the Germans sending reinforcements to the south where the 1st Army & the French were attacking. We were probably successful in doing this.
